Imperfect Practice
Sonjie Feliciano Solomon: Imperfect Practice delves into the artist’s meditation practice and art making practice. The paintings and textile installation reflect the energy of breathing in and out and evoke imagery of water, bodies, and landscapes while eluding to intangible elements: consciousness, atmosphere, mindfulness.

Hovering between landscape and ether, vibrating with the rhythm of breath, Sonjie Feliciano Solomon’s works help the viewer find their way to center. With misty layers of soft, pulsating, intangible fields, Solomon captures meditation’s portal: the tranquil space between the body and weightlessness.
This new series starts with the breath. Imperfect Practice is a manifestation of both the artist’s meditation practice and studio practice. These new works are an attempt to visualize and give form to a meditation practice. The resulting rhythmic paintings echo patterns in nature that have a calming effect on the nervous system. This series is the newest body of work in Feliciano Solomon’s larger studio practice where she investigates material and metaphor in parallel to translate internal universal human experiences into physical form. Feliciano Solomon takes the tools of meditation, mindfulness, and therapy, which we employ to ground ourselves for restorative benefit, and gives them a visual language to share with an audience. In creating a physical object, her work becomes a focal point for the viewer to create space for quiet and reflection upon one’s own stories. With a background in design, Feliciano Solomon balances the rules and processes she creates with chance and improvisation creating work that occupies space between the designed and the intuitive.
